The Mortgage Assistance Team (MAT) was created by DFI on March 31, 2020, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On that same day, Governor Jay Inslee and DFI Director Charles Clark announced the DFI was taking steps to assist distressed Washington homeowners who are unable to make their mortgage payments due to COVID-19 restrictions by creating a team dedicated to assisting those homeowners.

MAT consists of Consumer Services Financial Legal Examiners (FLEs) Brett Carnahan, Amanda Herndon, Kendall Freed, Kristina Shenefelt, and Drew Stillman. These FLEs, with the assistance of DFI’s front desk staff and the Enforcement Unit’s Program Specialists, take calls from Washington homeowners, landlords, business owners, and other Washington residents. The team uses DFI’s COVID resources, plus the many other resources relevant to each caller’s issue.

The callers have expressed appreciation for the team, both for the assistance they provide and also for being an actual person on the other end of the line.
