The investor learned about Coinlion through online communications with an individual purportedly named Susan Liu, who claimed to be an investment executive with Carlyle Group. Coinlion used the domain https://www.trillioninfo.com, among others. The investor tendered increasing amounts of money to trade on the Coinlion platform. In approximately July 2024, the investor, per Coinlion’s instructions, mailed $500,000 worth of cashier’s checks to Evensource, LLC to the attention of Khoa Pham. Afterwards, Coinlion told the investor that there was an issue with cashing the checks and requested that the investor take steps to resend the funds. The investor then attempted to withdraw funds from their account on the Coinlion platform but was instructed to deposit additional funds to “unlock” withdrawals. The investor lost approximately $858,000.
