About

This case stemmed from a romance scam where the investor was approached by someone called Bao Nam (“Nam”) on Instagram. The investor was introduced to CoinOKC (https://coinokc.online), which claimed to provide cloud mining services to investors and promised investors guaranteed profits.

The investor first transferred $1,000 to the Zelle account of a Nhi Nguyen, who claimed to be Bao Nam’s sister and could help the investor deposit the funds to CoinOKC. The investor then invested $14,000 through several transfers to Nhi Nguyen’s Zelle account and a wire transfer to an overseas account with the assistance of a third-party exchange service.

The investor could trade with the initial $1,000 and saw purported profits received in the account. However, the investor could not withdraw any funds unless she paid multiple fees to satisfy the verification process. CoinOKC’s website is no longer active.
