DFI Encourages Teachers To Sign Up For The National Financial Literacy Challenge
DFI is encouraging all Washington high school teachers to sign their classrooms up for the National Financial Literacy Challenge. The Challenge is a voluntary, 35-question test that students can take online to earn recognition of their financial knowledge.
The challenge is being offered Nov. 3 - 26, 2008.

FDIC & NCUA Temporarily Increase Insurance Coverage To $250,000
On October 03, 2008 President Bush signed into law the emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. The law raises the FDIC and the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund deposit insurance limits from $100,000 per account to $250,000 until December 31, 2009.

On September 22, 2008 DFI helped launch the Bank on Seattle-King County initiative. Bank on Seattle-King County is a public and private initiative to connect people without checking and savings accounts to affordable mainstream financial services, including checking, savings, credit, and financial education opportunities.

Work Group Assessing Financial Literacy In Washington, Seeks To Increase Statewide Consumer Education
Responding to Governor-sponsored legislation to assess financial literacy in Washington State, the Washington Financial Literacy Work Group was created.
Members of this work group will determine the status of financial literacy in Washington State and define what action is necessary to increase financial literacy at all age levels. The group will provide regular interim reports on their findings and submit a final report to the governor and legislature by Dec. 1, 2008.
